Hidden carbs to watch out for
January 8th, 2011 by JillkIf you don’t know a lot about low-carb eating but you do know that you’d like to cut down on your carbohydrate consumption, you may think you know what to cut down on. Bread, potatoes, pasta, cereals, cakes and biscuits – starchy foods in general. Of course you would be absolutely right. However, there are lots of foods which contain a high proportion of carbohydrate that you may not be aware of at all. Here’s a list of foods together with their carb content – some items may surprise you!
- Milk – 5 carbs per 100ml. A normal serving would probably be about 200ml. Try Soya milk instead, or cream in your coffee.
- Sweetcorn – 18 carbs
- Banana – about 30 carbs for an average sized banana
- Apples – approx 20 carbs per apple
- Orange juice – 25g carbs per 250ml serving
- Yoghurt – about 15 carbs per serving
- Cream of chicken soup – 20 carbs per can
- Cream of tomato soup – 26 carbs per can
Parnsips – 14 carbs per average serving
This is just a handful of foods kind of chosen at random to illustrate the fact that carbs are lurking everywhere – even where you least expect to find them! If you are serious about low carb dieting, whether it be Atkins or another regime you have decided to follow, you should plan it well and familiarise yourself with the carb content of all foods.
